A monologue is a one person scene. It is when an actor steps into a character’s shoes and portrays that character's thoughts and feelings. It can be dramatic, romantic, intense, funny or a combination.
Q.What will take place at the audition?
A.You will sign-up for a time slot. You will pick from one of two monologues provided to perform for your audition. Practice and bring the monologue to life with a character. You do not have to memorize for the audition -- use the script during the audition. The Directors may ask you to perform the monologue a second time with some added direction.
Q. Why are we asking you to audition with a monologue?
A. This allows you to show the Directors some character choices and emotions; and it gives you time to show character traits without having to rely on other actors in line readings.
Q. What is the Director looking for?
A.The Director is looking for your emotional connection to the character and understanding of the text and relaying how the character is feeling.
Q. Is there a right or wrong choice for how you play the character you audition with?
A.No .What IS important is to make a choice(s) for your character and go with it. Be strong in your choices. Don’t just read the lines,
Q. Will the character in the monologue you perform at the audition dictate the role you will get?
A.If you are cast, the role in this Short Play Festival will be assigned to you based on where you best fit into the roles available. The roles may not necessarily be represented by your audition character, however, from your audition, the Director will be able to discern the right role for you,
Q. Does memorizing the monologue give you an advantage in casting?
A. No. Memorizing is not expected at this audition. But being very familiar with the monologue is the key – so you can get into the character. But if you do choose to memorize – be sure that you know it really, really well. The Director would rather you are thinking about the character and not the ‘lines’. If you stumble with memorization it can hinder your performance.
